![]() One such company is Christenson Communities/AdvantAGE Assist, which builds and manages retirement communities. Truly people-first companies are rare, which is why I’m happy to highlight those that are, or are working towards it. People-first is not a set of activities, it’s a philosophy that permeates every aspect of corporate culture. Employees want great leadership, and when they don’t think they can get it, they’ll take whatever other compensation they can get. That’s an attempt to buy your employees’ commitment. ![]() What is People-First?Įxecutives who scoff at the idea of putting employees first probably think that it means lavishing employees with perks and benefits like on-site massage, gym memberships, beanbag lounge chairs and free food. It’s also the most fundamental (and most frequently missed) pre-requisite to building a pipeline of leadership and talent within an organization. It is still difficult to understand, it has no explanations or definitions and there are no pictures.I’ve been speaking and writing a lot about a seemingly counter-intuitive concept: putting employees ahead of customers and profits is the surest path to exceptional customer service and financial success. It does not meet the recognised Accessible Information Standard and other easy read guidance, or the government’s own consultation guidance. However, the quality of the easy read consultation document is really concerning. The consultation opened 14 December 2021, but despite numerous requests, an easy read version was not made available until late February – 24.02.22, leaving just 12 days for people to respond when people using the standard version have had 12 weeks. People First is one of over 200 organisations that have signed a letter to the Joint Committee on Human Rights telling them that the Human Rights Act Reform consultation is not accessible to people with learning difficulties, disabilities and other communication needs. Human Rights Act Reform – an inaccessible consultation Our community continues to be discriminated against and are suffering unnecessarily every day. Our weekly Self Advocate’s Support and Action Group are continuing to discuss this and other campaigns. We support people with learning difficulties, disabilities and autism to fight for their rights and lead their own campaigns, but recognise that we may not always be able to agree or take an immediate or clear position. We want to be have the opportunity to ask these questions and be involved in the debates. We have questioned if it is first and foremost about equality and discrimination against Disabled people, or is it also a platform for the ‘anti-abortion’ movement and restricting the rights of all women (including Disabled women)? ![]() We are also concerned about some of the supporters of the campaign and their intentions. We need to carefully consider how the rights that we are fighting for has an impact on the rights of others if such a ruling was to be successful. Many of us have been fighting for our freedom and our right to exist, but we believe that we need further debate and open discussions that are led by disabled people. Over the last year our understanding and discussions about this case have deepened. Disabled foetuses can be aborted up to full term. ![]() The #DownrightDiscrimination campaign is about removing the clause in the Abortion Act that allows abortions to happen after 24 weeks of pregnancy based on disability. In July 2021, People First (Self Advocacy) and the Covid-19 Support and Action Group offered its support to the #DownrightDiscrimination campaign and the High Court case, led by Heidi Crowter and others, calling for ‘equality in the womb’. We want to have the same opportunities to life and living as everyone else. We support and fight for equality for all, but particularly for people with learning difficulties, disabilities and autism.
